He is today also member of the Board of Directors of dry bulk shipping company ESL Shipping Ltd, Chairman of the Board of the newborn Rauma shipyard Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) as well as Managing Director of his own Arctic & Maritime Consultancy Vientistrategit Oy.

Mikko Niini graduated from Aalto University as a Naval Architect in 1970, joined Wärtsilä Helsinki Shipyard for the pioneering Manhattan project to work on the very first ice model tests in Finland, held different positions at Valmet Shipbuilding Group in design, publicity, sales and yard management from 1971 to 1986, and worked as Vice President of Wärtsilä Marine (1987-89), Kvaerner Masa-Yards (1989 to 2003) and Aker Yards. From 2004 to 2014 he served as CEO and President of Aker Arctic Technology Inc. In these positions he has actively worked in different cultures and parts of the globe including the U.S., Russia, U.A.E., China, Asean, Japan and Australia on contracts for tankers, ferries, cruise liners, cableships, icebreakers and LNG carriers.

From 1993 to 2003 he was Board member of Nemarc Shipping Corporation as well as ZAO Arctic Shipping Service, Murmansk, Russia, operating tankers Kiisla, Uikku and Lunni in Arctic waters and from 2011 to 2013 in Troms Offshore ASA, Norway until sold to Tidewater Inc.

Mikko Niini has been elected Chairman of Finnish Maritime Association, the Oil & Gas Working Group of the Finnish-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission for Economic Cooperation and the Nordic Committee of Lloyds Register of Shipping. He is a Board member of Center for High North Logistics (CHNL), Bodö, Norway, the Finnish Sail Training Association and Finland-Canada Trade Association, member of the European Roundtable of Maritime Clusters, North European Committee of BV, Member of ABS, the Nordic Safety Committee of DNV GL, as well as member of SNAME, RINA and STG.
